Workshops

I'm available to speak to your church or readers' group about the craft and business of writing or on the subject of toxic churches. And of course I love to hear from readers and talk about writing, books, and chickens! Send me an e-mail.

I'm currently presenting the following workshops:

  • The Plotting Party--Are you an outliner or a pantzer? Do you know what you're going to write, or do you "fly into the mist"? The truth is, in publishing, it doesn't matter. What matters is your ability to sell the book before you write it. Using the steps of the Hero's Journey, the sticky-note method, and mind mapping, you will learn how to craft a selling synopsis that is also a working outline for your novel.

  • Marketing Your Book Begins With You--In most publishing houses, budgets are tight, so creating demand for your book is likely going to be up to you. But how do you create those seven impressions that make a reader remember your name? How do you create buzz for your book when it isn't out yet? And if you're unpublished, what's the point of marketing at all? In this workshop, you'll learn how to market yourself in advance of publication, market your book to editors and agents, and finally, once you have a contract in hand, market both your book and yourself to your readers.

  • Pitch to Your Niche: Discovering Your Writer's Strengths--What's your submission method? Throwing spaghetti against the wall might work in the kitchen, but it's a recipe for failure with editors and agents. Find out how to analyze your reading history, your writing process, and your experience, and then target the niche where it all comes together to launch a successful writing career.
